Watching and hearing the deer rut from Maison du Coué

A natural spectacle, right at the cottage's door

The deer rut is one of the great autumn events in the Pyrenees. Every year, during the rutting season, male deer let out their long, hoarse bellow to defend their territory and attract does. It's a powerful, almost unreal sound that carries far in the evening silence.

At Maison du Coué, there's no need to head off into the forest at dawn: the meadow just below the cottage, facing the mountains, is a regular crossing point for the hamlet's deer. Many guests watch and listen to them rutting right from the terrace, drink in hand.

When and how to watch

• Period: from mid-September to mid-October, every year.
• Best time: at dusk, when deer come down to feed in the meadow and the rut echoes through the valley.
• Where: from the cottage terrace, or a short walk on the marked "In the Deer's Footsteps" trail, starting right from the hamlet.
• Tip: bring binoculars and stay quiet, the wildlife is still wild and easier to approach in calm conditions.
